Some aggrieved ex-militants from Niger Delta states Tuesday took to
the streets of Abuja and National Assembly accusing the management of
the Amnesty Programme of fraud and embezzlement of over N405 million
belonging to them.
The group which claimed to have come from Berebegha Camp, one of the
recognized camps during the disarmament programme, specifically accused
one Mr. Peter Evah from the Amnesty Office of withholding their monthly
stipends since 2011, which according to them amounts to about N405
million.
The group, numbering over 500 ex-militants from different Niger Delta
States, said they were in Abuja to protest against what they called
injustice being meted on them by the Amnesty Office and call on
President Mohammandu Buhari to stage full scale probe of the programme
in order to unravel the true picture of how the funds are being spent.
The protesters, who displayed placards with different inscriptions
read: ‘Enough is enough, Perter Evah must go’, ‘President Buhari should
probe Amnesty Programme’, ‘Pay us our money Peter Eva,’ and ‘We want
justice from government’among others.
Speaking on the matter, the Coordinator of the group, Barr. Angela
Adigwe said the non- payment of the protesters stipends dated back to
2011, alleging that the action was a conspiracy among the top management
of the Presidential Amnesty programme.
She appealed to President Buhari to as a matter of urgency institute a
panel of inquiry to probe the programme starting from the onset, so as
to determine whether the real persons were benefiting from the
programme.
