The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission
(NCC), Prof Umar Danbatta, has disclosed that the commission’s decision
to block all unregistered sim cards was to assist security agencies to
monitor criminals.
Prof Danbatta, made the disclosure Thursday, while speaking at the NCC Day at the ongoing International Trades Fair in Abuja.
The EVC, who was represented by the Head of Public Affairs in the
Commission, Reuben Mouka, said it is dangerous for subscribers to use
phone lines that do not bear their identities because of the security
implications and warn them to stay clear.
“We have severally informed subscribers that it is dangerous to use
phone lines that do not bear your
identity because it may have been
registered by a criminal. On the other hand, you should not give out
your identity to be used by somebody who you do not know. Therefore, you
need keep your phones secure at all times”, said the NCC boss.
Also in his remarks, the Deputy Director Consumers Affairs in the
Commission, Mr Femi Atoyebi, said the Comission had commenced monitoring
of call data of suspected kidnappers and insurgents and had been
forwarding same to appropriate security operatives.
He said the commission had been working with security operatives on
the fight against insurgency and kidnapping, and would stop at nothing
to provide all the necessary support to rid the country of all forms of
communication related crimes.
