THE Senate has ordered the investigation of Code of Conduct Tribunal
(CCT) Chairman Mr. Danladi Umar for alleged corruption bordering on
fraud, bribery and inflation of contracts.
Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki is standing trial before the
CCT over a 13-count charge of alleged false declaration of assets.
Yesterday, a member of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and
Public Petitions, Senator Obinna Ogba (Ebonyi Central), presented a
petition against Umar on the floor of the Senate.
Ogba told the Senate that the petition, written by a non-governmental
organisation, Anti- Corruption Network, was endorsed by one Ajaso I.
Ajaso on behalf of the group.
The Ebonyi Central lawmaker told the Senate that the petitioners had not sought any judicial remedy against Umar.
He said the group wanted Senate intervention to probe the allegations contained in the petition against Umar.
Assured that the group was not seeking any judicial remedy, Saraki
referred the petition to the Senate Committee on Ethics for immediate
consideration.
The Senate President mandated its chairman, Senator Samuel Anyanwu,
to conduct a thorough investigation of the allegations and report back
to the Senate in plenary in two weeks.
Last week, another group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria
(HURIWA), petitioned the National Assembly, demanding an immediate
probe of an alleged N10 million bribery allegation against Umar.
HURIWA’s petition was signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel
Onwubiko, and addressed to Senate President and the Speaker of the House
of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.
The group claimed that the EFCC had started an investigation into the
allegations levelled against Umar and his personal assistant, Mr. Ali
Gambo Abdullahi.
