"I
have never seen it before," Gorden Eden, police chief in Albuquerque,
New Mexico, said. "I've seen tragic loss of children in car crashes. To
me this is one of those crimes which is unexplainable."
Details
are sketchy, and Eden said police don't have information on a suspect
yet, mainly because of conflicting statements from witnesses about the
description of the car from which shots were fired.
What is known is that a sheriff's deputy spotted a disabled vehicle on Interstate 40 and pulled over to help, according to CNN affiliate KRQE. That's when the girl's father said his daughter had been shot.
Police had not yet interviewed the girl's family because they needed time to grieve, Eden said.
What
led up to the shooting was unclear Tuesday night, and detectives said
the suspect probably fired off shots while driving, KRQE said.
Eden begged for the public's help in figuring out who did this.
