U. J. Esuene Stadium Calabar, Cross River State |
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has confirmed that
the venue for the National Sports Festival will not be shifted from
Calabar, Cross River State.
The festival has been postponed two
times because Cross River State was not ready and there have been
suggestions that the hosting right might be re-awarded to another state.
The
minister said on Monday in Lagos he had a healthy discussion with the
state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Asu Okang, and a compromise was
reached on the hosting of the festival.
“I am aware that the festival has been postponed twice but that was
not during my tenure as the minister,” he said. “I can assure you that
Calabar will still host the festival, I spoke with the commissioner who
reiterated their interest in hosting the games.
“The commissioner
will be coming to see me in Abuja on January 12 for further discussion
on the modalities for hosting and their level of preparedness.
“He
has assured me that they have upgraded some of their facilities for the
festival, and have overcome some of the challenges that necessitated
the initial postponements.”
The minister however said the new date would
be announced after the meeting of the Festival’s Joint Technical
Committee.
