Liberia’s President Sirleaf Wants Presidential Terms Cut From 6 To 4 Years

Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf wants the legislature to cut the country’s presidential term from six to four years.

“She has written to the legislature asking them to consider amending the constitution for the presidential term; that it can be limited to a two four-year term,” an official said.

Information minister Lewis Brown made the announcement when in an interview with Voice of America radio on January 6, 2016.

President Sirleaf also supports dual citizenship, which she said is aimed at preventing the alienation of people who are truly Liberians.

In 2014, over 500 delegates of the country’s national constitution conference voted in favour of the reduction of the presidential term limit from six to four years. 

They also voted for the senators to hold office from nine to six years, representatives from six to four years as well as the controversial proposition calling for the declaration of Liberia as a Christian nation.

The 1986 Constitution Review Committee of Dr Amos C. Sawyer increased Liberia’s presidential term from two four-year terms to a two six-year terms.
